There’s nothing wrong with the classic bosun’s chair as a method of mast climbing but if you are looking for a more efficient way to climb, consider a mast climber (MCWP). They can be used in place of scaffolding on construction sites and offer more ergonomic working conditions with less effort.
Mast Climbing 101: Understanding the Basics
Most manufacturers of mast climbers include detailed user guides and safety advice in the kit and offer sophisticated planning diagrams to help occupants prepare for work at height. Some also offer occupant, operator, and refresher training courses. The ANSI A92.9 document describes the training that should be received by all mast climber occupants and operators.
To use a mast climber you start by securing yourself to the main boom and then using a secondary safety line with a Klemheist knot to clip into the base of the mast. You then slide both ascension devices up the line until you reach chest height, transfer your weight onto the lower device and step into the foot sling. As you climb you continue transferring weight and sliding the devices up the line until you are at the top of the mast. You should always keep a crew member below watching you, as falling debris from the mast can be a deadly hazard for those below.
