AI has become an essential part of game design, influencing NPC behavior and how we interact with the world. But generative AI (gen AI) is taking that to the next level, creating games that can adapt and evolve themselves as you play.
For example, imagine a game that adjusts its difficulty to suit your skill level or how it remembers your choices to shape the story. Currently, these types of experiences are limited by how complicated they can be to program. But gen AI allows for nonlinear, player-driven gaming that’s more personalised and engaging than ever.
How Game Publishers Use AI for Marketing Insights
Procedural generation is another area where AI is transforming games. It allows developers to create huge maps that are unique every time. This is what makes open-world games like Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild feel alive.
Gen AI could also make games more personalised, with characters that respond to your actions in ways that feel natural. For example, if you’re playing a shooter and your character runs out of bullets the AI could trigger it to find cover until it can reload.
But not everyone is convinced that generative AI is the answer. Josh Sawyer, the studio director at Obsidian Entertainment – the team behind narratively rich games like Pentiment and Fallout: New Vegas – isn’t sold on incorporating gen AI into his games. He instead points to the modern vogue for character customization as an easier way to integrate the technology.
